Obituary for Butch Nix

Ronald “Butch” Edward Nix of Mooreville, Texas, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017, at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas after a courageous fight against Behcet’s disease. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 4, at St. Jerome Catholic Church with Father Raksahganathan Selvaraj officiating. Burial will follow at Mooreville Cemetery. Rosary will be recited by Deacon Rae Carter beginning at 6 p.m., followed by visitation, Wednesday, May 3, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home Chapel.

Butch was born July 15, 1964, in Waco, Texas, to Bill Nix and Mary Woodard Nix. Butch was reared in the Elm Mott area and attended Elm Mott and Connally schools. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army, and then worked at Heritage Dedicated Services as a supervisor for 30 years. He enjoyed playing slow pitch softball and loved to coach his girls’ fast pitch softball teams. Butch could be found every Friday and Saturday night at a local dirt track lending help in the pits wherever needed. He also loved his Baylor Bears and Texas Rangers. He was always ready to take a bet on the next Texas Hold’em poker game. Butch was the true definition of everyone’s biggest fan.

In 2013 Butch was baptized, confirmed and became a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Waco. He was an avid supporter of St. Louis Catholic School. Becoming Catholic was one of Butch’s proudest fulfillments in life.

Butch was preceded in death by his grandparents.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Casey Phelps of Mooreville; two daughters whom he loved with his whole heart, Kalyn Nix and her significant other, Colt Flores, and Cailynn Burrow; son, Justin Cunningham; two granddaughters, Averie Basquez and Madison Cunningham; his parents, Bill and Beverly Nix and Mary "Sissy" MaGee; and brother, Billy Dale Nix. He is also survived by Casey’s family, whom he considered his own, and many other extended family and friends. Butch never knew a stranger.

Pallbearers are Dean Abbey, JP Dowell, Jimmy Dulock, Chase Jupe, Kevin Jupe, and Keith Shilling. Honorary Pallbearers are Heritage Dedicated Services employees.

Memorials may be made to The Mooreville Cemetery Association, St. Louis Catholic School, or Robinson Little League. The family invites you to leave a message or memory on our “Tribute Wall” at
