Diann Dillon passed away on March 31, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. There will be a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery on Monday, April 3, at 3:00 p.m., with the Reverend Aaron Zimmerman and Dr. Harry C. Powell, III officiating the services.
Diann was born in Odessa, Texas, on January 19, 1952, to Ray and Billye Roberts Dillon. Her father worked for Shell Oil causing the family to be transferred between West Texas and southeastern New Mexico. She graduated from Hobbs High School in Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1970. She attended Texas Tech University, earning a BA in Dance in 1974. Continuing her studies in dance, she earned an MFA from Southern Methodist University in 1976.
Upon graduation from SMU, Diann accepted an assistant professorship on the dance faculty at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) in Springfield, Missouri. She remained there for three years, then chose to move to New York City. She felt she was not giving her college students, who aspired to be professional dancers, her best if she had not experienced the process herself. Diann often said that the four and a half years she spent in New York were her happiest. Eventually, the pull to return to Texas was just too strong. She lived in Dallas for several years before moving to Waco.
Once in Waco, Diann attended Region 12's Alternative Teacher Certification Program and was hired by Waco ISD. She taught fifth and fourth grades for ten years. During this time, she attended Baylor University and earned both a MS in 1998 and a doctorate in 2004 in Education Administration. For the next eleven years of her career, she served as an Instructional Specialist and then as an assistant principal. She retired from Waco ISD in December of 2013.
Diann enjoyed traveling to Europe, reading, spending time with her friends and family, and most especially spoiling her beloved Scottish Terriers and cats.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and dear friends, Anne Meye, Weldaleen Satterwhite, and Rick Reisinger.
Survivors include her brother, Duane Dillon and his wife, Babs, of Baytown, Texas; a niece, Chelsea Dillon of Dallas; an aunt and numerous cousins, as well as many close and dear friends.
It was Diann’s request that flowers not be sent. Instead, donations may be made to Fuzzy Friends, ABC Clinic or the Waco Humane Society.
