Obituary for George Martin Newman, Sr.

George Martin Newman, Sr., passed away and went to be with our Lord peacefully at 83 years in Marietta, Georgia, with his family by his side on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. A graveside funeral will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, Texas, on March 1, at 3:00 p.m., with the Rev. Richard “Dick” Freeman officiating.

George was born November 24, 1933 in Waco, Texas. He graduated from Waco High School and The University of Texas where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. While attending Baylor Law School, he worked at the family theaters: the Orpheum, Imperial Westview Drive-in, and Oaklawn Drive-in. Upon graduation from Baylor Law School, he practiced law and was a co-founder and President of Texas Steel Building Company, a builder of manufacturing plants throughout Texas California, Alabama, and North Carolina.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Marguerite Newman of Waco.

George was a devout Christian and his greatest joy was the love of his family. George leaves behind many family and friends to cherish his memory, including his wife of 38 years, Patricia “Patty” Newman; his seven children, Mark E. Newman and wife, Robin Ann Newman, of Marble Falls, Texas, John W. Newman and wife, Deborah Dean Newman, of Corpus Christi, George M. Newman, Jr., and his wife, Stephanie Sabo Newman, of Greer, South Carolina, Marguerite E. “Libby” Newman and husband, Rusty Meyer, of Blanco, Texas, Stewart D. Newman and his fiancée, Cindy Lay, of Palmer, Colorado, Joshua L. Newman and his wife, Sabrina Newman, of Marietta, Georgia, and Julie Lynne Newman of Marietta; twelve grandchildren, Michael Edward and Samuel Scott Newman, Benjamin Joseph, Matthew Jacob and John Patrick Newman, Joseph Edward and Jennifer Nicole Newman, Amanda Ann and Brandon Davis Newman, and Ryder Makai, Grace Madison and Ava Madelyn Newman; and three great grandchildren, Ryder Weston, and Jacob and Zoë Alexis Newman.

His Honorary Pallbearer will be his oldest and dearest friend, Mr. James “Woody” Wood of Waco.
