Agnes Warren Barnes, age 82, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 19, at First United Methodist Church Waco. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco. Agnes was born March 26, 1934 in Waco, Texas. She attended the University of Texas and after graduation she taught school in Austin and Lorena. She worked with her husband in his business, Barnes Consulting Engineering, and later for the Wallace Group. She was involved in many organizations in Waco, various women’s groups at First Methodist Church Waco, Daughters of the American Revolution, Past President of Historic Waco Foundation, and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She was a member of the Odell Dudley Sunday School Class. One of her biggest passions outside of her family was her love of postcards. She began collecting them as a young woman and in 1999 used her collection of Waco postcards to write a book, Waco Texas: A Postcard Journey, which is still in print. She traveled and spoke at many events about her love of postcards and had them displayed both at Baylor University and the Waco-McLennan County Library. Agnes was proceeded in death by her husband, John Barnes; her brother, Cleon Kay Warren; and nephew, Lee Warren. She is survived by her daughter, Alice Rathe and son-in-law Mark of Tulsa, Oklahoma and their children, Andrew and Tyler; son, Edward Barnes and wife Becki of Granbury, Texas; and their daughter, Anne; sister-in-law, Gracie Warren; and niece, Ann Warren Hightower and husband Mike all of San Antonio, Texas. Pallbearers are Andrew Rathe, Tyler Rathe, Mark Rathe, Mike Hightower, Edward Barnes, and Nick Sparks. Honorary Pallbearer is Jack Munson. Memorials may be made in Agnes’ memory to Historic Waco Foundation, DAR Scholarship Fund, or CaringBridge.org.
