Arcadia Katie Nino February 5, 1933 August 15, 2011 Heaven became a little more beautiful this week with Arcadia Katie Nino's arrival. A memorial service will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 19, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 1401 Washington Ave. Katie was born to Eugenio and Daria Pena in Delmita, Texas, Feb. 5, 1933. Katie and her husband, Reyes, moved to Waco in the mid 1960's to raise a family of five daughters and three sons. With her husband often traveling, Katie's years were devoted to what she enjoyed most in life, tending to her children. As the children grew more independent, she found time to attend classes and become a real estate agent, a career that led to many lasting friendships. For 12 years, she also worked at Baylor University's residential halls. In many ways, this job allowed her to become a mom again, this time to a much larger family of promising young women. Katie was always happy when she was in the company of others, but she was happiest when she was giving to others. During the past ten years, she suffered many hardships, including multiple strokes, a heart attack, and losing her best friend and daughter, Delia, to cancer. Despite these setbacks, however, she always continued to remember all of her loved ones' birthdays. And while she was paralyzed in her final days, she continued to try to give something to those around her, even if it was only a personal compliment, or a smile. If there is one theme that embodies the life she lived, it was her spirit of giving. And this is why, today, heaven is a little more beautiful. Arcadia Katie Nino is survived by Reyes Nino, father of her eight children; and Jackie Brewer; her sisters, Oralia P. Narvaez and Celia P. Vale; brother, Eugenio Pena Jr.; daughters, Irene Nino Diana Acosta, Gloria Nino-Monacelli, and Irma Nino; sons, Gilbert, David, and Ray Nino Jr.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many loving friends.
