Ascension Al S. Hurtado, 89, of Waco, was called to be with his Lord Friday, Feb, 18, 2005. At his bedside were his wife, Helen Duron Hurtado, daughter Mary Wilson, sons Michael and Gilbert. Rosary will be recited at 6pm Sunday, Feb. 20 with visitation from 5-8pm Sunday at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey chapel. Services will be held at 12:30pm Monday, Feb. 21, at St. Francis on the Brazos Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fernando Hernandez and the Rev. Sergio Lopez officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Al Hurtado, also known as “Chon,” was born May 13, 1915, in Estancia de Animas, Zacatecas, Mexico. Al was very young when his family migrated to Central Texas. They finally settled in Waco by 1944. In 1953 he married Helen Duron and after fifty years of togetherness celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on August 16, 2003. Al Hurtado lived a full life, a strong believer in returning God’s gifts with loving care for his family, his church and community. A young founder of St. Francis on the Brazos Parish, he remained an active member for 75 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society, and in later years, the St. Francis Social Ministry. Mr. Hurtado retired from Sears after 30 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Tiburcia Hurtado, siblings, Albert Hurtado, Julio Hurtado, and Hope Lopez. In addition to his wife, Helen Hurtado, survivors include daughter, Mary H. Wilson, and husband, Rob, and their two children, Kathryn and John of Victoria; son, Michael Hurtado and his two children, Miguel and Marina of Waco; and son, Gilbert Hurtado. Other survivors include sisters, Lorenza Amaro and her husband, Felix of Ft. Worth, Mary Reyes, Janie Almanza, Pauline Ruiz and her husband Domingo, all of Waco; brothers, Rufus Hurtado and wife, Vicky of Ft. Worth, Leon Hurtado and wife, Barbara, Joe Hurtado and wife, Beatriz, Steve Hurtado and wife, Mary, and Felix Hurtado. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis Social Ministry or St. Francis Restoration Fund.
