Doris Lucile Stanford Miller

April 30, 1920 — December 28, 2007

Doris Lucile Miller of Waco passed away Friday, December 28, 2007, at Regent Care Center. Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 31, at Oakwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Carl Freeto officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, December 30, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Doris was born April 30, 1920, in Lorena, Texas, to Irving Paul Stanford, a McLennan County deputy sheriff, and Annie Stanford. The family lived over the county jail, and she was tickled when her young friends would want to visit her at home. She often told that story that it was a while before she realized they were not coming to see her but to see the jail. Doris was educated in the Waco Independent School District, graduating in 1937. She was especially proud of the Sanger Avenue Silk Socks, and that she was able to double promote in the 4th grade. Doris married William H. Miller, the love of her life, in 1965, and he passed away in 1972. She worked at 3M Company in Waco and in Dallas. Doris was a Worthy Grand Matron in the Eastern Star, Waco Chapter No. 7, and was also a long time member of Waco Christian Women’s Club. Doris was a lifetime member, from the Cradle Roll, of St. John’s United Methodist, which later changed to Central United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and an aunt and uncle. She is survived by a cousin, Elenor Mace; Delores Lesnau and Elsie Vahrenkamp, her caregivers; special friends, James “Sandy” and Pam Barron; long time friends, Ed, Leslie and Karen Kinchen; and her longtime hairdresser, Pat Childs. A very special thanks to John Byrum, coordinator of senior minister and home care at Central United Methodist Church, and three Meals on Wheels volunteers, Travis Weldon, Joe Riley and John Hatchel. Memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital or Central Texas Meals on Wheels. The family invites you to leave a message or memory in our “Memorial Guestbook” at www.wilkirsonhatchbailey.com.
