Gary L. Neighbors

September 1, 1941 — April 19, 2004

NEIGHBORS, GARY L. Gary L. Neighbors, 62, of Waco died Monday, April 19, 2004 at his residence. Services will be held 2pm Thursday, April 22, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with The Rev. Roland Timberlake officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North with full military honors. Visitation with the family will be 6 – 8 pm Wednesday, April 21 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Mr. Neighbors was born September 1, 1941 in Springfield, Illinois to James A. and Ruth Neighbors. He graduated from Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. He received a Masters degree from the University of Missouri in 1969. He retired from the U. S. Air Force with the rank of Colonel in 1984 after serving 22 years. He was employed by the Brazos River Authority from 1985-1990. He was general manager of Angelina Neches River Authority from 1990-1998. From 1998-2004 he was an agent with Kelly Realtors. Mr. Neighbors served on the boards of American Cancer Society and Relay for Life. He served as President of the Rotary Club and Retired Officers Association. He was an avid supporter of Baylor football, basketball and baseball. His first love was golf. He attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and was a member of the Wednesday Morning Men’s Prayer Group. Gary had pride in his family and loved helping others. His fight against cancer has been a true inspiration to many. His family would like to thank all of his special friends and others for their prayers and support over the past year, especially Dr. Canning, Dr. Crosthwait, Dr. Haluska and Misty and Cindy with Providence Hospice. He was preceded in death by his parents and step father, Art Passoni. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Sharon Neighbors, sons, Brent Neighbors and wife, Lori of Norman, Oklahoma and Todd Neighbors and wife, Jennifer of Hillsboro, grandchildren, Zach, Jake and Ben of Norman, Oklahoma and Taylor and Kennedy of Hillsboro, step mother, Jewell Neighbors of Sun City, Arizona, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Yeulalo and Howard Mauldin and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Buddy Obenoskey and their children, Jeff, Craig and Darren all of Waco and Jana Obenoskey of Springfield, Massachusetts. Pallbearers will be Lyle Pettit, Richard Hill, Mike Christina, Don Edwards, Bill Bauer, Walter Grisham, Rollin Khoury and Terry Hunter. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Hall, Jay Baker, Randy Odil, Russell Cox, Ralph Calhoon, and Mike McClinton. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Providence Hospice.
