Jean L. Berres, Ph.D. October 16, 1924 February 10, 2010 Dr. Jean Louise Berres, 85, retired Baylor University, Professor of Journalism, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at St. Catherine's Center in Waco, Texas. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 16, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waco. Burial will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, preceding the service. Dr. Berres was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, on October 16, 1924. Her parents were Peter and Margaret Kaas Berres. She grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she attended Marquette University. She obtained bachelor and master degrees from that school. Jean worked as a journalist for 20 years, including 16 years in advertising and public relations at the Medical Division of General Electric. She returned to Marquette as an Assistant Professor of journalism. In 1972, she moved to Carbondale, Illinois, to attend Southern Illinois University where she taught and obtained her doctoral degree. In 1975, she moved to Texas and taught journalism at East Texas State University for one year. She then joined the Baylor University journalism faculty where she taught from 1976 until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Waco and its Women's Guild. She taught in the RCIA program and was a Eucharistic Minister there. She was also a member of Altrusa Club. Jean is survived by numerous cousins, colleagues, and friends.
