Jewel Slaughter Neel

October 7, 1911 — January 19, 2011

Jewel Slaughter Neel October 7, 1911 - January 19, 2011 Jewel Slaughter Neel of Waco gently passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at her residence. Family graveside services were held Saturday, January 22, at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Huckeby officiating. Jewel was born October 7, 1911, in Turnersville, Texas, to Louis and Genevia Overcash. She married very young, had five children by the age of 27, and became a grandmother at 36. She worked at G.F. Wacker’s Variety Store in Kermit, Texas, and was known as “Granny” and sometimes “Granny Chick” to a generation of kids who shopped there for candy, school supplies, pet turtles, and all manner of miscellaneous merchandise. She was a member of Grace Temple Baptist Church in Kermit, where she tended the nursery and loved everybody’s babies, and of Grace Temple Baptist in Waco, where she loved her church family—and the bus trips they took from time to time to see the USA. Jewel was preceded in death by her first husband, Cecil Slaughter, in 1966, and second husband, Joe Neel, in 1993; by two sons, Billy and Jacky Slaughter; and by great grandson, Donny Culwell. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Parker of Waco; two sons, Bob Slaughter and wife, Jean, of Kermit, and Jimmy Slaughter of Springfield, Missouri; four grandchildren, Toni Herbert and husband, John, Barbara Culwell and husband, Rodger, Bobby Slaughter, and Randy Parker; five great grandchildren, Jason Culwell and wife, Amber, Jonah Herbert and wife, Claire Sexton, Micah Diaz and husband, Ron, Cody Parker, and Logan Parker; and four great-great grandchildren, Taylor and MacKenzie Culwell and their mother, Candy, Alison Culwell, and Magen Parker. Memorials may be made to Grace Temple Baptist Church of Waco or the charity of your choice.
