NEWTON, JOE D. Joe D. Newton, age 85 of Waco died Monday, December 29, 2003 at a local hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2pm Saturday, January 3 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 305 N. 30th St., Waco with the Rev. Janne Alro Osborne officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Mr. Newton was born April 7, 1918 in Cameron to Walter O. and Mary Jeter Newton. A graduate of Yoe High in Cameron, he received a BBA degree from Baylor University in 1940. He began work in 1939 at Citizens National Bank of Waco, worked in most departments of the bank, retiring as executive vice president and director in 1982. He also served as president and director of The Citizens Company, Citizens Fidelity Insurance Company and other affiliated companies. He helped organize The Central Texas Chapter of Bank Administration Institute, and was later elected president. He graduated from the B.A.I. School at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and was president of its National Alumni Association and a Trustee of that school. He entered military service in April 1941 in the Signal Corps, AUS. He saw service in several states and in Hawaii, Guam, and Okinawa. He was president of the old Lake Waco Country Club and served as an officer in Goodwill Industries, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and co-founder, president and director of Midwestern Little League. He was a vestryman of St. Albans several times, was senior warden of the church and was treasurer of the endowment fund for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Oliver, Bill and Frank and by his first wife, Helen Awtrey Newton. He is survived by his wife, Elen Jones Newton; son Joe D. Newton II and wife, Kai and their children, Emily and Sam Ashley; by stepsons and their wives, Duncan and Rachel Gilpin of Ravienna, Italy and daughters, Shannon and Jenna, and Hurley and Angela Gilpin of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and niece, Ann Newton Walker of Naples, Florida and her children, Laura, John and Amy.
