PRESTWICH, STANLEY Lieutenant Colonel Retired Stanley Bruce Prestwich died Friday, January 10, 2003 in Waco, Texas. Services will be held at 11:30am Monday, January 13 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. with the Bishop Alan Mayfield officiating. Interment to follow at Waco Memorial Park North with full Military Honors. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Sunday, January 12 at the funeral home. Stanley was born June 14, 1919 in Huntington, Utah, the first child of Armeldo and Lylia Johnson Prestwich. He attended early school in Huntington, Utah but the remainder of his education was in Orem, Utah where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1937. In 1941 he began his military career in enlisted status at McClellen Field, Sacramento, California. Serving until January 1943 when he accepted an appointment as a flight officer. During this period he completed approximately 3500 flights as a glider pilot. In October 1943 he accepted a commission as 2nd Lieutenant until demobilization in September 1945. Principal duties have been in the fields of personnel and administration. Colonel Prestwich participated in the Chinese Communist Forces Spring Offensive, the United Nations Summer-Fall Offensive, Second Korean Winter Campaign and the Vietnam Defense Campaign. In addition to his war time service in Korea and Vietnam, he also served a tour of duty in Alaska. He returned to McClellen AFB in January 1967 to assume the duties of Chief, Military Personnel Division. Awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster; Commendation Ribbon; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award; American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars; National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Star; Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars; Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Republic of Korean Presidential Unit Citation; United Nations Service Medal; and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. During his military career, Colonel Prestwich attended the University of Houston, University of Colorado, University of Denver, University of Wyoming; Sacramento State, McKendree College of Lebanon, Illinois and various military institutes. While stationed at Blackland Army Air Field in Waco, Stanley met and married the former Dorothy Wright on October 1, 1942. Stanley belonged to Fidelis Lodge #1127 AF Waco Scottish Rite Bodies, Waco York Rite, George R. Scott Chapter, National Sojourners, Heroes of ’76, Karem Shrine, Danang Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, Ham Radio Operation and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter-day Saints. Colonel Stanley Prestwich was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark William Crain and great grandson Jacob Crain. Survivors include wife of 60 years, Dorothy Prestwich; daughters, Jeri Crain and husband Hubert Standlee, Sheila Scala and husband Louis; four grandchildren, Douglas Scala, Johnathan Scala, Michael Crain and wife Kimberly, Melissa Hernandez and husband Oskar; one great granddaughter, Alyssa Hernandez and 12 brothers and sisters also mourn his death. Pallbearers are Duane ''Buddy'' Baker, Richard Hancock, Howard Porter, Douglas Smith, Claude Ervin and Bobby Forrest. Honorary Honor Guard will be Karem Legion of Honor and Honorary Pallbearers are members of Fidelis Lodge #1127, National Sojourers, Waco York Rite, Karem Shrine and members of the Order of the Eastern Star.
