Mable Larrinda Self Sligh

Mable Self Sligh Mrs. Charles L. Mable Larrinda Self Sligh, Sr. passed away Monday, September 19, 2005 at Hillcrest Hospital. Graveside services will be at 3:30 PM Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Julie Pennington-Russell officiating. Mable was born October 14, 1911 in Lipan, Hood County TX to S.I. Self and Mary Stell Self. She graduated from Denton High School and North Texas State University with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Home Economics and Physical Education. She married Charles L. Sligh, Sr. on December 22, 1934 in Denton, Texas. They celebrated 56 years of happy marriage. They both taught school in Santo, Texas and later in Elm Mott and Ross, Texas. She loved her students and teaching. Mable was active as a Girl Scout in 1929. She helped organize what is now the Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council, led a troop, served on the council board of directors, co-chaired Camp Kachina for 21 years along with hosting summer day camp at her family farm. She was a Bluebonnet Girl Scout Council 1994 Woman Distinction. She was active in the Waco Council of Garden Clubs for 40 years, served as president of Bud and Blossom Garden Club for 16 years. Mable was also on the board of the Woodland Springs Nursing Home for 10 years. She was a member of the Cameron Park Zoological and Botanical Society and a member of the Lydian Sunday School class at Calvary Baptist Church. She was a farmer and loved gardening, all animals, and birds. Mable enjoyed raising chickens and collecting them as well. Sewing and water-coloring were her hobbies. Caring for her family was her priority. She was always creating interesting experiences for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that would help them learn something new. Making memories for them was her joy. She was fondly known as Granny to all. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, C.L. Sligh, Sr, parents, Spencer Irvin Self and Mary Amy Stell Self, sister, Ona Self, brother, Quinby Self. She is survived by her son, Charles L. Sligh, Jr., Waco daughter, Alice Ogden and husband Greg, Waco; sister, Louise Self, Abilene; grandchildren, Charles L. Sligh, III and wife Kim, Winston -Salem, N.C. and Chase Sligh and wife Stacy, Waco, Jordan Ogden and wife Christy, Dallas, and Geoffrey Ogden, Waco great grandchildren, Isaac, Kyndal, Lillie, and Max Sligh. sister-in-laws, JoAnn Rogers, Waco and Frances Livingston, Santa Cruz, CA., numerous nieces, nephews and devoted friends, Wilma Blackwell, Eula Jackson, Sharon Hittle, Linda Freeman and Doris Downey.
