Margie E. Luce

Margie Everitt Luce of Mart died Friday, January 30, 2004 at a Grosbeck Hospital. Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 P.M Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at South Park Cemetery in Pearland, Texas with Darrell Simpson officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 11:00-12:30 P.M. Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at the South Park Funeral Home . Margie was born in 1918 in a country farmhouse in San Jancinto County outside of Cleveland, Texas to Luther and Alverta Everitt. She was the oldest of four children being her brother Luther Earl, sisters Tiny Mamie Christine and Bobby Jean. Her sister-in-law, Lorraine also was like a true sister to her. During the depression she moved with her family to the Heights area of Houston, Texas. About the age of ten she took Christ as her savior and was baptized by the Reverend T.C. Jester at Baptist Temple in Houston. She graduated from Reagan High School in Houston in 1936 and became a bookkeeper. She was married to Wilbur Martin Luce May 1, 1938. When her husband was called to duty by the United States Army during World War II she traveled with him to Fort Bliss, Texas where he received his medical training and she served as a civilian secretary for the Army during that time. When Wilbur returned from his duty in the South Paific at the end of the war, they settled in the Heights and their only son, Wilbur Martin Luce Jr. was born. During the fifties they opened and operated a small business, Community Drug Store, in the third ward area of Houston. In 1958, on the day of their twentieth anniversary, Wilbur suffered an aneurysm and passed away a short time later. A bookkeeper by training, Margie eventually earned her real estate broker’s license and was involved in the real estate business until her retirement. While in Houston, she was an active member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in 1999 was given an award and recognized for her many years of volunteer service for handling numerous financial and real estate transactions for the church. In 1999 she moved to Mart , Texas to be near her son Butch and daughter in law Susan Simpson Luce. This move also placed her nearer to her only grandchild, Holly Luce Lee and her husband James, and their two sons Daniel and J.D. While living in Mart, she became an active member of the Mart Senior Citizens Center, serving as their treasurer for a time. An outgoing person, she organized many domino and 42-games and tournaments with her friends. She also became involved with a “ladies circle” of primarily Methodist women who gathered frequently for bible study and fellowship. Of course, her family was her life, and she so cherished her time with them. Her daughter in law Susan, was so very special to her. Her loving granddaughter Holly and her husband James made her so proud. Her two little great grandsons, Daniel and J.D. gave her so much pleasure in reading and playing games with them. She leaves a legacy of love to all who knew her, and will be buried alongside her beloved husband, Wilbur, in Houston. Margie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Bobbie Jean Hill; brother-in-law, Richard Hill; and brother, Luther Earl Everitt. Survivors include son, Dr. Wilbur M. Butch Luce and daughter-in-law, Susan Simpson Luce of Lake Limestone, Texas; granddaughter, Holly Anne Luce Lee and husband James David Lee of Richardson, Texas; sister, Mamie Christine Tiny White and husband, Jack White of Sugarland, Texas; and sister-in-law, Lorraine Everitt of Houston. Pallbearers will be Clint Black, Don Kay, Jeff Mulvihill, Travis Brand, Keary Everitt, Tracy Huffman, and James Lee. Honorary Pallbearer will be Robert Earl Everitt.
