Mary Gene Walker May 14, 1926 - April 17, 2009 Mary Gene Walker of Satin passed away Friday, April 17, 2009 at a local retirement center. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 20, at Austin Avenue United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Mesa and Chaplain Suzanne Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Garden Room. Mary was born May 14, 1926 in Hillsboro, Texas to Searcy and Eugenia Smith. At an early age, the family moved to Bryan. She grew up and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan where she was head cheerleader. She continued her education at Baylor University where she attained her B.A. and M.A. degrees. Mary was a teacher in Satin and an algebra and geometry teacher at Marlin High School for 16 years. Mary's spiritual and compassionate gift was an encourager to others as evidenced by her phone calls and thousands of notes and cards. She enjoyed working with stained glass, woodcarving, loved animals and enjoyed her ranch in Bryan. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She always expressed her love to her family with "I love you the best". Mary and Bill were married June 13, 1947 in Bryan, TX and moved to Satin where she lived for her remaining life. Mary was a member of Austin Avenue United Methodist Church where she was a high school Sunday school teacher, a teacher of the Evans Class, member of the Administrative Board and a meals on wheels volunteer. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Mary Lynn Drews. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Bill Walker; her son, Rick Walker III and wife, Debbie of Woodway; grandsons, Chris Drews and wife, Paige of Lexington, TX; Tyler Walker of North Carolina; granddaughter, Jordan Walker, of Waco; three great granddaughters, Ava Marie, Violet May and Wendy Lynn Drews; and numerous cousins. Pallbearers are Sid Jones, Pat Pattillo, Barker Chapman, Jeff Massingale, Jack Aldredge, Wendall Crunk and Bill Lewie. Memorials may be made to Austin Avenue United Methodist Church or the charily of your choice.
