MICHAEL KEARNEY Michael J. Kearney, 85, of Waco, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2002. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:30pm, Tuesday, September 10 at St. Louis Catholic Church with the Reverend Monsignor Mark Deering officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd., is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Kearney was born in Galveston, Texas on May 24, 1917 to Catheryn and Michael Kearney. He graduated from Kirwin High School in 1934 and attended Business College. He married Agnese Cary on July 9, 1943. He joined the Naval Air Corps in 1942 and took basic training at University of Georgia Pre-flight school. He served in the Pacific on Okinawa. Mr. Kearney returned to Galveston in 1946 and entered the retail business and moved to Waco in 1955 where he was employed with Goldstein Migel. In 1959 he was made secretary-treasurer. In 1962 he and his partner, Jack Sachs, opened Mr. Jack’s Village Shop. He operated the business for 28 years before retiring in 1991. Mr. Kearney served on many committees doing civic and church work. He was state president of the Retail Credit Executives of Texas and President of the Serra Club of Waco. He was a longtime member of the St. Louis Catholic Church and served two times as President of the Reicher High Booster Club during the building of the Reicher football stadium and also held offices in the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Agnese Kearney. He is survived by his three children, Michael J. Mickey Kearney, Jr. and wife Linda of Galveston, Jeffrey Kearney and wife Olivia of Fort Worth and Allison Kearney of Waco; granddaughter Ann Kearney of Austin and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jerry Jansing, Mike Jansing, John Fulbright, Harry Matustik, Willie Hammonds, Jack Restivo and Mel Appell. Memorials may be made to Caritas of Waco.
