December 3, 1934 — April 8, 2002

BERTRAND, JR., ROY Roy Brown Bertrand, Jr. age 67, of Waco, passed away after a lengthy illness on Monday, April 8, 2002, at a local hospital. Visitation will be from 6-8pm, Wednesday, April 10 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, April 11 at Oakwood Cemetery with Dr. Scott Walker officiating. Mr. Bertrand was born December 3, 1934 in Waco to Roy Brown Bertrand, Sr. and Gladys Nemmer Bertrand. He was a graduate of Waco High School and a 1956 graduate of Texas A & M University. While at A & M, he was a member of the Military Corps of Cadets, A Ross Volunteer, Sergeant Major of the Regimental Staff, and a Distinguished Student. Upon graduation he received the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and began his military career in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Georgia. After leaving active duty he continued serving his country as a member of the Army Reserve, the Texas National Guard, and as Liaison Officer to West Point Military Academy. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Bertrand worked in the family business, Bertrand’s Restaurant, with his father for twenty years before entering the life insurance industry. He married the love of his life, Darlene Hurst in December 1954. They remained devoted to each other throughout their forty-seven years of marriage. He was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Bertrand is survived by his loving wife, Darlene, his adoring daughters and their husbands, Jennifer and Jeff Heinz of Waco, Kathleen and Kyle Reeves of Longview, grandsons, Jason and Justin Reeves of Longview and Branson Heinz of Waco, mother, Gladys Bertrand of Dallas, brother, Dr. John D. Bertrand and wife, Andrea of Dallas, mother-in-law, Evelyn Hurst Wieting of Waco, aunt, Bertha McCall of Waco, and numerous nieces and nephews and loving friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Hunter, Roland Reese, John Westmoreland, John Bell, Jeff Heinz, Kyle Reeves and Richard Stone. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. WILKIRSON-HATCH-BAILEY
