Sara Vasquez Perez, 98, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, at St. Francis on the Brazos Catholic Church, 315 Jefferson Ave., Waco, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. with Deacon Jessie Garza officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, 2124 S. 5th Street, Waco.
Sara was born June 11, 1925 in Bishop, Texas, and grew up in Waco, Texas. Sara worked throughout her childhood as a cotton harvester along with her parents. At the age of 12, she met her future husband and love of her life, Ignacio G. Perez, and they were married when she turned 18 at St. Francis Church. She became a mother at 19 and had ten children; Antonio, Suzanna, Sarah, Larry, Johnny, Ignacio Jr., Georgia, Maria, and Cynthia. Sara was known for her cooking. She made amazing menudo, flour tortillas, mole, and tamales. She would always make enough to feed her family and other neighborhood kids. Sara was the heart of her family. Many of them referred to her as, “Our Queen.” She was the gatherer and made sure everyone knew family always came first.
Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Ambrosio and Ysabel Vasquez; husband, Ignacio Perez; son, Antonio Perez; daughters, Georgia and Maria Perez; son-in-law, Lewis Salazar; and grandson, Adam Perez.
Sara is survived by her sisters, Betty Gutierrez, Tomasa Juarez, Eulojia Fuentes, and Janie Castaneda; her children, Gloria Perez; Susie Pecina and husband, Andrew; Sarah Salazar; Larry Perez and wife, Angelina; Johnny Perez and wife, Priscilla; Ignacio Perez and wife, Janie; and Cynthia Lopez and husband, Jose Sr.; 20 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren; as well as many other family members.
Pallbearers will be Luis Salazar, Jose G. Lopez Jr, Greg Perez, Richard Perez, Justo Perez, Nick Perez, and Andrew Pecina.
