Scott Tabor Poage December 5, 1931 May 13, 2008 Scott T. Poage, P.E., Ph.D., age 76, former Professor and Past Chairman of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Houston, from 1968 to 1983, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at his home in Waco. Graveside services will be at 12:00 noon, Saturday, May 17 at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 7 p.m., Friday, May 16 at 609 Edgewood in Waco. He was the son of Scott A. Poage and Robbie Lee Tabor Poage. He attended Waco public schools and graduated from Waco High School in 1949, from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and received his Masters of Science Degree from Texas A&M University and Doctors degrees at Oklahoma State University. His academic career included teaching and research in industrial engineering and related subjects at both of these institutions and at University of Texas at Arlington, where he was professor of Industrial Engineering from its inception until 1967. In 1968 he became Professor and Chairman of the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Houston. As a young man, he served as a page in the United States Senate and assisted his Uncle Bob in his congressional activities, although he himself never entered politics. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a production control officer at the headquarters of the Air Material Command. Together with his father and uncle, he owned and operated the Lazy 11 Ranch in Throckmorton County under the family name, Poage Land and Cattle and managed the families land holdings throughout the state. Scott never married but leaves behind several cousins and many, many friends. Scott also served as a consultant to many firms, such as Texas Instruments, Ling-Temco Vought, American Airlines, Grocers Supply, U.S. Armed Forces Institute, U.S. Foreign Aid Program, University of San Carlos at Guatemala and others. He specialized in computer aided work measurement systems, queuing problems, production scheduling and inventory control systems. He was the author of several software packages for use on Personal Computers, including Pic-Pac, a system for generating engineered standards of performance in grocery warehouses. He was also the author of the book, Quantitative Management Methods, published by Barnes and Noble, and a vast number of published articles on such topics as laboratory simulators, analytical methods in industrial engineering, and work sampling. Scott was a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, served as National Vice-President and a member of the Editorial Board of the I.I.E. Transactions Journal. He is listed in Who's Who in Education, American Men of Science and was a member of many other technical and professional societies. Scott was a long time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he served as an acolyte during his teen years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his uncles, W.R. Bob Poage and Conger Poage and cousin, April Poage Woolsey. He is survived by his cousins, Ellen Woolsey Mosher, Laura Lynn Woolsey Duggan, George Walton Poage, III, and Genevieve Poage Holmes; also by his close family friends, Elzoria Tubbs, David Lasley and Bob Sherman. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or to the Industrial Engineering Department of the University of Houston.
