Vera Leona Howze

Howze, Vera Vera Howze, 101, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at a local nursing home. Services will be Friday, March 18 at 10:30 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Rev. Jim Chandler officiating. A visitation with the family will be Friday 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Vera was born June 24, 1903 in rural Falls County to Robert Ephram and Annie Eugenia Garret. She was the fourth of ten children, eight of whom have preceded her in death. Vera married Thomas Franklin Howze on May 20, 1922 in Durango, Texas. After 63 years together, he preceded her in death on February 14, 1985. Vera was an active member of St, John’s United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Friendship Sunday School class, the Women’s Society of Christian Service and the Madonna Garden Club. Vera was a homemaker until the outbreak of WWII when she joined in the war effort by helping make tents for the Armed Forces at the Crawford-Austin factory. She later worked at Hawk and Buck Manufacturing Company where she made uniforms for the service men. When the war ended, she returned to homemaking. Vera was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. Survivors include three daughters, Helen Elliott and husband Doyle of Waco, Viola Snell and Doris Shehorn of Robinson; four grandchildren, Donna Weaver and husband Carl of China Spring, Steve Shehorn and wife Yolly of Bakersfield, California; Kenny Snell and wife Karen of China Spring, Kelly Snell and wife Paula of Robinson; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Leola Castleberry of Odessa and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Kenny Snell, Kelly Snell, Carl Weaver, Andy Shehorn, John Byrum and Jim Knight.
