Vernice Johnson Weathers passed away, Friday, December 9, 2005 in Waco. Graveside services will held at 1:30 pm, Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Clover Hill Cemetery in Lott, TX with Rev. Aaron Derrick officiating. The family will receive visitors from 6 – 8 pm Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Mrs. Weathers was born on November 21, 1913 in Waelder, Tx. to Sherman and Sadie Johnson. She graduated from the University of Texas in Austin in 1937 with a B.S. degree and a major in vocational home economics. She started teaching at the age of 19 in Engle, TX. after having attended college for one year. She continued her teaching in the winter while attending school in the summer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she taught at Rosebud, Mart, Brownwood, LaVega and Waco University Junior and Senior High Schools. She retired from the Waco schools in 1979. On July 13, 1941, Vernice married Robert M. Weathers in Llano, TX. During the time he was overseas serving in WWII, she taught in LaVega. After the war, Robert continued in the Army and the family was stationed in Washington, D.C., Japan, France, and Albuquerque, NM. She enjoyed making comfortable and attractive homes in each of these locations. After her husband’s retirement from the service, she returned to Waco and to teaching. She was a member of the Estherian Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Waco, of the Texas Retired Teachers’ Association and enjoyed being a member of Providence Auxiliary for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Daisy Talvitie. She is survived by son, Robert Sherman Weathers and wife, Glenna of Waco; niece, June Siple and husband George and their daughter Jaana all of Pittsboro, NC; nephew, Bill Talvitie and son Erik of Philadelphia; aunt, Lonie Brite of Lockhart and many cousins.
