Vernon Gordon Vaughan, Jr.

Rev. Vernon Gordon Vaughan Jr. September 29, 1929 – October 21, 2005 Rev. Vernon Vaughan, 76, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, October 21, 2005 at Providence Hospital. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 25 at Wilkirson- Hatch- Bailey Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Powers and the Rev. Steve Abbe officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 24 at the funeral home. Vernon was born September 29, 1929 in Burkburnett, Texas to Vernon Gordon Vaughan Sr. and Roxie Owens Vaughan. Vernon attended Baylor University and received a BA from Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas. Vernon was ordained as a Baptist Minister in 1957. Vernon married his wife of over 48 years, Darlene Polk, in 1957. He began his ministry as pastor of New Salem Baptist Church in 1957 and became a house parent at Buckner Boys Ranch in Burnett, Texas in 1959. Vernon was then called as pastor of Little Dear Creek Baptist Church in Chilton, Texas where he remained pastor until his death. Vernon’s love for people was also expressed through his teaching in the Waco Independent School District. He taught vocational classes at University High School for a number of years as well as teaching special education classes at various other schools in Waco. At the time of his death he was still a substitute teacher with WISD. Vernon was preceded in death by his mother, father, and a sister, Jo Snedeker, and brother-in-law, Donald Polk. Survivors include his wife, Darlene Polk Vaughan; sons, Kevin Vaughan, and Keith Vaughan and wife, Lisa, all of China Spring; sisters, Nell Erby of Arkansas, and Betty Poe of California; brothers, Billy Vaughan and wife, Marsha; Douglas Vaughan and wife, Carolyn, all of Spring, Texas; sister-in-law, Erma Polk, of Lorena; three grandchildren, Logan, Kolby and Seth; and several nieces and nephews. Vernon is also survived by numerous friends that were as close to him as his family.
