William Henry Junghans, Jr.

October 16, 1918 — July 10, 2005

Junghans, Jr., William Colonel William H. Junghans, Jr., USMC Ret., passed away Sunday, July 10, 2005 at a local hospital. A military funeral and burial will be held August 25 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, July 12 from 6 to 8:00 PM at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque. He was born October 16, 1918 to Kathryn and William H. Junghans, Sr. in Waco. He graduated from Texas A & M and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in USMC in 1941. He participated in the defense of Pearl Harbor during the initial Japanese attack December 7, 1941. He participated in the Vella La Vella and Northern Solomon Islands operation. It was during the Vella La Vella operation that he was awarded the Bronze Star with combat “V”. He participated in the Saipan and Okinawa’s operations and the initial occupation of Japan. After the war, he was stationed at the Marine barracks in Washington DC. He also served in Korea as Senior Advisor, Korean Marine Corps Schools and he served in Yokusa, Japan as Staff Marine Officer and Senior Marine Officer Flag Allowance. He served in a variety of command and staff assignments in the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was the first Township Manager of Norristown, PA. and Township Manager of Bensalem, PA. He was a member of Austin Avenue Methodist Church and the Retired Officers Association. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce C. Junghans whom he married September 7, 1946.
