Alvis Mitchell “Mitch” Lewis, 79, of Waco, Texas passed away at home on July 15, 2025, surrounded by family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco, Texas. The funeral service will follow on Monday, July 21, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Beacon Hill Baptist Church in Waco. Interment will take place immediately after the service at Waco Memorial Park in Robinson, Texas.
Born on September 1, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, Mitch was a member of the U.S. Army, serving during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam. After returning, he worked a variety of jobs—from Piggly Wiggly and Continental Airlines to roughnecking in the oil fields, selling investments worldwide, and eventually retiring as a TSA agent. One of his favorite jobs was writing human interest stories for the newspaper in Waco. Additionally, he started a roller hockey league that positively impacted the youth in the Waco community.
During his time in Dallas, his best friend Eady played matchmaker, introducing him to a beautiful redhead named Dorothy, who became the love of his life. Their 34-year journey began on October 5, 1991, blending two families in a Brady Bunch way. Mitch, who was dedicated to his family and close friends, was also a vivid storyteller and lifelong artist, often creating paintings and giving them as gifts. He celebrated his faith at Beacon Hill Baptist Church, where he also painted a wall mural of the Lord’s Supper in their Fellowship Hall.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Alma (Till) Lewis; brother, Ron; and sisters, Kay Blankenship and Sue Channon.
He leaves a living legacy through his wife, Dorothy; children—Jared Acker (Misty), Eric Lewis, Corey Carlisle (Nadine), Randy Carlisle (Jenni), Joey Carlisle (Melissa), Cara Bowling (Kevin), Candace Bland (Jeremiah), and Michael Lewis (Michelle); and grandchildren—Caleb Carlisle (son, Elijah), Zachary Carlisle (wife, Kaitlyn, and children, Aubrielle and Peter), Isabella Winter (husband, Garrett, and daughter, Sadie), Riley, Colt, and Weston Carlisle, Camden Wilson, Charlotte, Madison, and Hannah Bowling, Claire and Abby Bland, Tanner and Sierra Acker, Alyssa and Jasmin Luna, and Ethan Collier.
Flowers or live plants will be accepted at Beacon Hill Baptist Church, or donations can be made to Mighty Oaks to support veterans struggling with PTSD.
