George Ken-Hsi Wang, 90, passed away on May 9, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. We are grateful to God for the excellent care provided by the physicians, nurses, staff, and all who entered his hospital room.
A private family celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
George was born in a small village near Shanghai, China. He earned his undergraduate degree from the International Christian University (ICU) in Japan. A few years after coming to the United States for graduate school at Yale University, he met May, with whom he shared nearly 63 years of marriage. He completed post-doctoral studies at Harvard University’s Cyclotron Laboratory.
George moved his family to Waco, Texas, where he began a 37-year career teaching physics at Baylor University. For many years, he also served on the pre-medical and pre-dental advisory committee.
After retirement, he devoted much time and energy to creating and nurturing a butterfly garden at his church, Lakeshore United Methodist Church. A member there for over 20 years, he also started the traditions of the “Fast for the Hungry Offering” and church-wide recycling. He had been a staunch recycler since the 1970s, long before it became mainstream.
We will miss his kindness, gentle spirit, and deep sense of gratitude. He was a man who believed firmly in doing his best and was passionate about cultivating critical thinking skills in his students. And then there was his humorous side, his beloved dad jokes and clever wordplay always brought smiles.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, church member, and teacher. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Providence Hospice (6700 Sanger Avenue, Waco, TX 76710), the Japan ICU Foundation (475 Riverside Drive, Suite 1844, New York, NY 10115), or a charity of the donor’s choice.
May you remember him whenever you see a butterfly.
The family invites you to leave a message or memory in George’s Memorial Guestbook at www.WHBfamily.com.
