Milford graduated from Mrs. Duncan’s Kindergarten, Sanger Avenue Elementary, West Junior High and Waco High, where he excelled as a student of Latin. He was accepted by Rice University in 1957 and graduated in 1961 with a degree in biology. Gleaning from what seemed like four grueling years at Rice, he noted in his memoire that he was “far from being the brightest person in the world.” He graduated with a medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas in 1965.
On April 27, 1963, he married Martha Webb Rhea in Waco, Texas. While in medical school, he was appointed as a Reserve Commissioned Officer in the United States Army in 1964 and 1965. He was accepted as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corp Regular Army in 1966. He served a one-year rotating internship and a four-year residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He received the rank of Major in 1968 serving three more years at Brooke Army Medical Center as Chief of Anatomic Pathology. Milford left the service in 1973 when he, Martha, Shannon, and Suzanne moved to Waco. He joined the Central Texas Pathology Laboratory and Hillcrest Hospital with Bill Henderson and Dave McTaggart where he practiced surgical pathology and electron microscopy.
Before retirement in 2005, he was in the records storage business from 1989 – 2002. After fully retiring, his interests were travel, especially to Santa Fe, France, and Germany; reading history and philosophy; classical music, especially the composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff; writing essays about politics and current events and his memoire; playing golf with fellow golfers: Bruce Henley, Mark Knapp, and Bob Corwin; watching Texas Rangers baseball; and being with family every chance he had.
A supporter of many community programs, he donated to the Waco Symphony, The Art Center Waco, Waco McLennan County Library, Cameron Park Zoo, Mayborn Museum, Keep Waco Beautiful, Waco Creative Arts, and the Pape Chamber Music Series.
