Ed was born in Sioux City, Iowa, and he grew up in Kingsley, Iowa. He attended Kingsley High School, where he played football, basketball, baseball, and golf and began dating his high school sweetheart, Greta. He began his career in the grocery industry at the age of 15, working at the local grocery store. He later attended Iowa State University and married Greta on August 14, 1976. He remained devoted and in love with her for 50 years. Ed graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and he remained a lifelong, devoted fan of Iowa State athletics. Ed became a passionate and respected leader in the grocery industry, spending the majority of his career with H-E-B after also holding positions with Randall Foods and Albertsons.
His charismatic and approachable nature was a rare combination that allowed teams to thrive while genuinely enjoying working alongside him. Ed believed in people, built lasting relationships, and had a way of making colleagues, store partners, community leaders, and friends feel that they mattered. God’s calling for Ed was to nurture people- both the customers who trusted and relied upon HEB and the partners who served them. Ed had a gift for connecting people and connecting with people. He retired from H-E-B in 2021 after 30 years of serving stores and communities throughout Central Texas.
Outside of work, Ed loved golfing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed retirement to its fullest, spending his time on golf trips, planning for the next golf trip, hunting in Texas Hill Country, and traveling with Greta to see his Cyclones compete. As important as these were to Ed, nothing brought him more joy than being present for the people he loved. His love for his four grandchildren was undeniable, expressed through unruly gift giving, enthusiastic support of their activities, and an unending willingness to read their favorite book.
His faith was central to his life. Ed passed along his strong Christian faith to his family, modeling grace, generosity, devotion, and a commitment to Christ throughout his life.
Ed’s dedication to serving others extended well beyond his career, and he used his talent for connecting people and connecting with people for the betterment of others. He gave generously of his time and leadership to organizations throughout Central Texas, including the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Baylor Athletics, Ascension Providence Foundation, Waco Family Medicine, Central Texas Food Bank, Juvenile Diabetes, and United Way. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, an organization that held a particularly special place in his life. Throughout his career and retirement, Ed believed deeply in showing up for his community and leaving it stronger than he found it.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Margerie Page, as well as six brothers and sisters, and two brothers-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Greta; daughter Dana and son-in-law Christopher; daughter Maegan and son-in-law Patrick; four grandchildren, Harper, Duncan, Emsley, and Declan; and five brothers and sisters, as well as seven brothers and sisters-in-law.
Ed accomplished much throughout his life, but the titles and organizations only tell part of his story. His greatest legacy is found in the people he loved, mentored, encouraged, and served. He will be remembered for his faith, generosity, larger-than-life personality, devotion to his family, and his ability to make people feel appreciated wherever he went.
