Homer D. Trevino, 78, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born and raised in Roma, Texas, Homer made Waco his home in 1976. He went on to serve the community for nearly four decades as the longtime Executive Director of United Way of Waco-McLennan County, where he dedicated his life to improving the lives of others. Through his leadership, United Way strengthened local families, advanced education, health, and financial stability initiatives, and united businesses, volunteers, and community partners to meet the needs of McLennan County. During his tenure, the organization raised more than $80 million, leaving a lasting impact on countless individuals and families throughout the area.
In addition to his community leadership, Homer shared his knowledge and passion for learning as an adjunct professor at numerous colleges, mentoring and inspiring generations of students. His lifelong commitment to service, leadership, and compassion earned him numerous honors, including the Liberty Bell Award from the Waco McLennan County Young Lawyers Association, Humanitarian of the Year from the Waco Conference of Christians and Jews, American Businesswomen Business Associate of the Year, and recognition through KCEN-TV Channel 6’s “6 Who Care.” He was also proud to have achieved the rank of Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout. In recognition of his extraordinary dedication to the community, the McLennan County Commissioners honored him with a proclamation in May 2017.
Homer earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary's University, a master’s degree from Baylor University, and completed graduate studies at Harvard Graduate School of Business. He also served as a commissioned member of the State Board for Educator Certification in Austin.
Homer is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Yvonne Trevino; his daughter, Adrianna Curington; his son, Max Trevino; and his grandson, Michael Curington. He also leaves behind many extended family members, dear friends, former students, and community members whose lives were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and service.
The family invites you to leave a message or memory of Homer on his Tribute Wall at www.WHBfamily.com.
