With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Janis Unell Mayfield, a cherished wife, sister, daughter, mother, aunt and friend to many, February 25, 2025, at the age of 73.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday March 7, at Rodef Sholom Cemetery in Waco with a celebration of life to follow from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Born in Marlin, Texas November 18, 1951, to Bernard and Lucille (Novich) Unell, Janis attended school in Marlin and graduated from St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio, Texas. She attended the University of Texas in Austin as her mother and daughter did. She was proud to work in the finance industry with her father and help grow the family business over many decades in Waco. She was passionate about helping others and was able to grow their finance footprint in Waco and the surrounding area.
Janis was larger than life and was known for her radiant smile, hysterical sense of humor, infectious laughter, and her heart for others that knew no bounds. Janis was devoted and passionate about her family and friends and would do anything to make others happy. She and the love of her life, husband Michael Mayfield, shared a beautiful journey together for almost 15 years, filled with laughter and fun-filled memories. She was an avid music lover, especially rock and roll, and enjoyed attending concerts with friends and family throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille and Bernard Unell, of blessed memory.
Janis is survived by her loving husband, Michael Mayfield; children, Adam Gordon and wife Cori Gordon, Samantha Unell and fiancé Tommy Moore; brother, Alan Unell and wife Deonna Unell. She also held Michael’s sons and family close to her heart, and is also survived by Mike Mayfield; son, Ashley Mayfield and wife Ginger; and grandchildren, McKenna, Cash, Sydney Reese Mayfield.
