With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of Jesse “Jaybird” Rodriguez, 72, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Jaybird was born on December 14, 1953, in Waco, Texas, to Antonio and Sarah Gutierrez Rodriguez. He attended Waco schools, where he met the love of his life and junior high school sweetheart, Vickie and together had 3 children. They were married on December 27, 1975, and joyfully celebrated their 50th anniversary this past December. As a teenager, Jaybird began his working career at the Waco Tribune Herald. He later dedicated 21 years at Smith Furniture before retiring from AAFES in 2017, where he was recognized with numerous awards for his hard work and outstanding performance.
Jaybird had a deep love for life and found his greatest happiness in spending time with family and friends. In his younger years, he played guitar in a band, and his passion for music remained with him throughout his life. Whether relaxing outside in his lawn chair surrounded by his beloved kittens or enjoying time at the Waco Missions, where he was a devoted member for 16 years, Jaybird embraced every moment. He was also an exceptionally skilled pool player who competed in numerous tournaments over the years, and he was a lifelong long fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
Jaybird lived life to the fullest, embracing every day with a smile. He treasured every opportunity to gather with family and friends, sharing stories, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Above all else, he considered time spent with his grandchildren to be his greatest blessing. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a reminder to cherish every day. His warm spirit, generous heart, and joyful presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Sarah G. Rodriguez, his brothers, Mario Rodriguez, Tony Rodriguez, Ted Rodriguez and Johnny Rodriguez, and his sister Mary Frances Morales.
