Maston Charles Courtney died on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, in Waco.

A memorial service will be held in November at Union Grove Cemetery in Wills Point.

Maston Charles Courtney was born on February 10, 1931, in Wills Point, Texas. Maston was many things: a brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, lawyer, mentor and a friend.

Maston graduated from Wills Point High School in 1948 and went on to the University of Texas at Austin where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1952. In 1954, he received a Bachelor of Laws and Doctor of Jurisprudence and was admitted to the State Bar of Texas.

He served in the US Army with an anti-aircraft artillery unit before beginning his law career with Gulf Oil in Midland. He was in private practice in Midland and Pittsburg before moving to Austin to serve under Will Wilson as Assistant Attorney General of Texas. In 1961, Maston moved to Amarillo to join the firm of Culton, Morgan, Britain & White, where he practiced until his death, through many name changes and mergers. That firm is known today as Courtney, Countiss, Brian & Bailey.

During his law career, Maston received many professional honors including President of the Amarillo Area Bar Association, Chief Justice Charles L. Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award and the Amarillo Area Junior Bar Old Lawyer Award (2006). Maston was board certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law, was a longstanding member of the State Bar of Texas and was dedicated to serving his clients well into his nineties.

He served on numerous Amarillo boards and committees. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Baptist General Convention of Texas and helped establish the Samaritan Pastoral Counseling Center in Amarillo. He served as President of the Knife and Fork Club, was chair of the professional division of United Way of Amarillo and Canyon and, at the time of his death, was serving as Director Emeritus of HighGround Advisors in Dallas.

Maston was a member of First Baptist Amarillo, where he served as chairman of the Fellowship of Deacons and other church committees, as well as teaching Sunday School. He served as a member of the Sesquicentennial Council of 150 for Baylor University and as a member of the Board of Advisors for George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Lucia, his parents, Albert and Lottie, his two brothers, Dr. Albert ‘Ken’ Courtney of Midland and Don Courtney Esq. of Amarillo, as well as a great-grandson Noah Maston Sykes.

Maston is survived by his wife of 75 years, Barbara, daughter Alison Campbell and her children Maston Naslund (wife Teffany), Annie Sykes (husband Andrew), and Bailey Campbell, and his sister, Elaine Foster. Maston is also the proud great-grandfather of Sebastian Sykes.
